state of the union
ONE OF THE MORE MAGNETIC ZONES in the desert is near the confluence (or union) of two drainages. Classic Colorado Plateau confluences include: Green/Colorado rivers in Canyonlands National Park, Yampa/Green rivers in Dinosaur National Monument, and the Little Colorado/Colorado rivers in Grand Canyon National Park. Although it’s not obvious, this piece features the confluence of North Fork Mill Creek and Mill Creek, otherwise known as Left Hand/Right Hand Mill Creek. There is a small petroglyph panel near this viewpoint; one of the pecked images looks an awful lot like a confluence to me. While I was getting source material for this piece, ravens were coasting near the slickrock fins, chased by raven shadows.
